Solve real-world problems to stop plastics entering our oceans. Join the UCL Ocean Health Challenge!
The UCL Ocean Health Challenge 2024 is an exciting opportunity for students aged 11-18 to dive into the world of engineering and environmental activism.
Over the course of eight weeks, students will work to design and prototype innovative solutions to one of the most pressing issues of our time—plastic pollution in our oceans. This hands-on challenge encourages students to think critically and creatively, from designing smart recycling bins to pitching behaviour change initiatives that tackle the root causes of waste. Expert guidance from renowned UCL academics such as Dr. Fiona Truscott, Dr. Helen Czerski, and Dr. Zoe Laughlin ensures that students learn from leading voices in engineering and ocean science.
For teachers, this challenge offers rich curriculum integration across STEM and non-STEM subjects like Geography, Sociology, and Design Technology. With flexible, high-quality resources available online, the challenge can fit seamlessly into your schedule, whether during lessons or after-school clubs. It’s an excellent opportunity to inspire students with real-world applications of their learning while meeting key Gatsby benchmarks for career readiness and can be entered into a CREST Bronze Award by their school. The challenge is accessible to all, with resources adaptable to various and levels, making it an inspiring and inclusive experience that captures the imagination of students.
Winning entries from each age group from state maintained schools will receive prizes for their school and themselves
