UK Junior Water Prize 2025

Support your students in conducting a water-based research project for a chance to win a trip to World Water Week in Stockholm!

UK Junior Water Prize 2025

The UK Junior Water Prize (UKJWP) is a national STEM competition aimed at improving quality of life by addressing the water crisis at a local, regional, national, or global scale. The competition challenges young people (aged 15 to 20) to take a fresh look at water problems and to develop a practical and innovative research project.

The UKJWP winner receives a £500 cash prize and an all-expenses paid trip to Stockholm during World Water Week (23-28 Aug), to compete in the international final of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP). At the international final they will compete against representatives from more than 30 countries for the US$15,000 award.

The UKJWP runner up wins a £250 cash prize.

All shortlisted applicants will be offered short workshops to improve their research / academic / people skills ahead of attending an in-person jury day at one of our partners' offices. The day will include a site visit and networking with their fellow applicants plus the jury. They are all invited to attend CIWEM's Flood & Coast conference in June, where they will meet water experts and Early Career Professionals.

The competition helps students improve their ability to identify and understand local, national and global climate issues, conduct independent scientific research, write compelling academic papers, and present findings to a jury at interview.

Important information

CIWEM is based in London, but the organisers will work to select a site for the jury day that is within the most efficient travel distance for all invited parties. The conference (attendance optional) is in Telford.

Participating students should be sure they can make themselves available for virtual or in-person activities on the below dates:

  • one day in the week of 26 May (in person, whole day, attendance required)
  • 3-5 June (in person, whole day, attendance optional)
  • 23-28 Aug (in person, all days, attendance required)

The deadline for submissions is 9am, 5 May 2025
