Workshop
LEGO Robotics challenge activities with robots provided by BJPCE Limited. Themes include space, the environment, and polar exploration.
Format
The day is organised around 2 sessions of 2.5-3 hours each with up to 40 students per session, although for larger groups, this can be increased to 3 sessions of 2 hours with up to 60 students per session.
In a session, pupils are taught how to build a basic robot and program it to do some simple tasks. In groups of 2-3, pupils then modify the robot to their own design for the challenges they select and extend the programming to make the robot complete as many challenge tasks as possible in the time available.
Sessions are great for mixed ability groups as tasks are graded by difficulty into easy, medium, and hard, with most groups completing 2 to 5 challenges in around 2-3 hours.
Pupils also have the opportunity to learn more about the different sectors, organisations, and careers associated with each challenge theme. For example, the space-themed challenge links to the engineering and computing associated with Mars rovers and space exploration.
Requirements
BJPCE Limited provides up to 18 robot kits for pupils to use, plus two challenge kits, and an “arena” for testing their robots.
Each team will need a laptop/PC for the programming software and a desk for robot assembly. BJPCE Limited will provide instructions on how to download free software to school computers before the activity day. Laptops can also be provided at additional cost.
Alongside desks, each challenge requires an area of 3m x 3m, which needs to be on a flat surface and is best if it is table height, although on the floor does work. A hall or adjoining classrooms with easy access would be the most suitable arrangement.
Cost
The cost is typically £650-£1000 per full day depending on numbers and distance from Surrey. BJPCE Limited is also able to deliver activities outside of the South East, although this may incur an additional travel cost. Grants are occasionally available to subsidise the cost - please enquire directly with BJPCE Limited.
