I'm a Scientist, Get me out of here

This online, student-led activity connects students with a diverse range of scientists from different specialisms and backgrounds.

It’s a moderated, flexible activity, that is safe, secure and easy to use. It’s suitable for ages from 10 to 18.

Students can:

  • See real-life examples and applications of science
  • Learn about the transferability of science and science qualifications
  • Chat with scientists in 30 minute energetic text-based online Chats, giving them a 1:1 personal experience
  • Ask in depth follow-up questions
  • See scientists as normal people (not ‘elite geniuses’) with hobbies, interests, pets, and families

I'm a Scientist supports students science capital. Young people with higher levels of science capital are more likely to see science as 'for me' and choose to study science subjects at a higher level. Students gain confidence through asking questions and forming follow-up questions based on a real-time response.

I’m a Scientist meets 6 of the Gatsby Good Careers Guidance Benchmarks and supports the Science Capital Teaching Approach. It’s a moderated, flexible activity, that is safe, secure and easy to use. It’s suitable for ages from 10 to 18.

Logistics

It’s quick and easy to set up, and text-only – no audio or video required.

It’s accessible from the classroom or home, and is super-flexible – you book chats at times that suit you and your classes.

Cost

Free for state schools, but there may be a charge for fee-paying and international schools.
