Introduce your students to the future of computing with this engaging, hands-on workshop exploring Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. Designed for Years 7–11 (S1–S4), this experience blends physical computing, coding, and real-world applications.

This workshop covers traditional coding and contrasts it with machine learning, where computers learn from data rather than explicit instructions. Neural networks, inspired by the structure of the human brain, are introduced as a key concept underpinning how machines learn.

Students engage in activities related to reinforcement learning, pattern recognition, and image recognition, including using an AI-powered camera to program their buggy to recognise traffic signals.

The workshop also touches on the ethical implications of AI, and helps students consider safety and privacy within their use of this developing technology.

What students will do:

  • Build and program a robot buggy using BBC micro:bit
  • Use an AI-powered camera to recognise traffic signals

Workshop formats:

  • Standard (2×2hr): Up to 60 students/day (working in pairs)
  • In-Depth (1×4hr): Up to 30 students/day

Curriculum links:
Mapped to KS3–KS4 Computing and Science. Supports understanding of algorithms, data handling, and emerging technologies.

Inclusive delivery:
Sessions are adapted for all learners, including SEN. Facilitators tailor content to suit age and ability, ensuring every student is supported and engaged.
