Engineering in the clouds

Laura's got the coolest job in the world - climbing wind turbines! Laura is an operations engineer at RWE, and is helping us reach net zero.

Laura Rwe

My name is Laura, and I’ve got the best job in the world. A couple times of month I go in a boat, and I go offshore a couple of miles, and I get to climb wind turbines, and I get paid to do it! How cool is that?

The reason that we do climb these turbines is to make sure everything’s in good working order, that all the components are working as they should be, because if we do have to replace them – it can cost thousands and thousands of pounds.

So, when I’m not as sea, I’m in the office talking to the turbines. I know that sounds kind of weird but it’s because the wind farm sends me signals, which I’m able to read on my computer. This lets us fix problems before it gets to be too expensive, or even dangerous. What’s great about this job is that it encourages creative thinking.

I’m always thinking abut how we can do things more efficiently. Currently I think we’re doing pretty well because with these 116 turbines we power 350,000 homes each year. But when it comes to reaching net zero – there’s always more that can be done. The sky is literally the limit.
