Discover the thrill of STEM through designing, building, and racing electric go karts! Inspire the future generation of STEM
The ProtoEV STEM Challenge uses the thrill of designing, building, and racing electric go-karts to excite young people about the electrification of transport and equip students with the core skills for the future workforce.
The challenge inspires students to use IT to learn about physics, aerodynamics, design, manufacture, branding, sponsorship, marketing, leadership/teamwork, media skills and financial strategy, and apply them in a practical, competitive and life-changing way.
Working alongside industry partners, ProtoEV also leverages world-class research and the expertise of universities and to create smooth pathways for participants to progress into apprenticeships, jobs or further or higher education.
Diversity, inclusion, and social mobility in STEM is our core purpose, with a particular focus on growing the confidence and self-belief of female, BAME and white working-class talent of all abilities.
Starter and Intermediary classes concentrate on the use of 3D printers and CAD/CAM software to design, manufacture, test, and race miniature motorised karts. Teams in the Advanced Class (ages 13 to 19) convert full-size petrol go-karts into high powered electric karts which they test and race, competing for the highest speed and energy efficiency.
Minimum of 10 participants, maximum of 20 participants.
Starter Class: £1000 + VAT, Intermediate Class: £2000 + VAT, Advanced Class: £5000 per team with teams raising an additional £5000 through sponsorships/donations.
The training of trainers model will be implemented, teaching the teachers/youth workers through a series of workshops on kart building, sponsorship raising, and a marketing masterclass, scheduled once a week for 12 weeks. The teachers/youth workers will then apply what they have learned in the classroom. There will be 3 x test days leading to 1 x race day in June 2022.
